Humans are a sapient race of bipedal creatures with curiously asymmetrical features, a large and twisted upper lip and enlarged nostrils. Their society strives for conformity and individuals who deviate too much from the standard physical appearance of the species are generally viewed as "freaks".
"Deformed" Humans[]
Occasionally, individual Humans may be born with a curious disfigurement which gives them smoother, more symmetrical faces with fewer wrinkles, as well as smaller lips and nostrils, very different from what their race considers the norm. These individuals are regarded as "freaks" by the government. Although chemical treatments may be able to cure this condition, this only works in a few cases. Individuals who have failed to obtain a "normal" appearance even after medical intervention are typically sent to exile, living in a small village populated by others with the same deformity.

Notes[]
- The episode's closing narration acknowledges the intentional ambiguity of the setting, claiming that it doesn't matter if this story takes place in the far distant future or in a distant world. It does, however, specify "wherever there is human life", which, along with dialogue from the episode using the word "human", leaves little doubt that they're intended to be viewed as human beings, not as some kind of alien.
