The Roswell UFO crash is an alleged incident involving a UFO crash-landing on a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. When news of the crash first surfaced in July 1947, Walter Haut of the Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release stating that the personnel from the field's 509th Operations Group recovered a "flying disc" that had crashed on a ranch in Roswell.[1] The United States Armed Forces stated that the crashed object was merely a conventional weather balloon. Popularity of the incident spiked in the late 1970s, with many ufologists promoting elaborate conspiracy theories claiming that an extraterrestrial spacecraft had crash-landed in Roswell, that the military had recovered the alien occupants of the craft, and that any statements claiming that the object was a weather balloon were merely part of an elaborate cover-up by the military.
However, in the 1990s, the United States military published two reports disclosing the true nature of the crash, which was a nuclear test surveillance balloon from Project Mogul. Despite confirmation that the crashed object was of terrestrial origin, many true believers suggest that the Project Mogul story is another part of a cover-up involving an alien spacecraft.
